A good lawn is one of the simplest things to get right and one of the easiest to let slip. Most of the problems we come across in gardens around Stockport, Manchester and Cheshire come down to a handful of habits rather than anything complicated, so here’s a proper rundown of what actually helps.
Cut it right, not just often
Cutting the grass too short is probably the single biggest cause of a patchy, weak lawn. It might look tidier for a day or two, but it stresses the grass out, exposes bare soil to weeds, and leaves the lawn far less able to cope when it gets dry. Never take more than a third off the blade length in one go, and raise the mower height during hot or dry spells. In spring and autumn, when growth is quick, once a week is usually enough. Height in summer, especially during a dry patch, mowing less often actually helps rather than hurts.
Water deeply, not daily
A quick sprinkle every evening does more harm than good, it encourages roots to stay near the surface where they dry out fast. Watering deeply but less often, ideally first thing in the morning or in the evening, works far better. An established lawn usually copes with a dry spell better than people expect, it’ll go a bit brown but bounce back once proper rain returns. Newly turfed areas are the exception, they need consistent watering while they’re settling in.
Feed at the right point in the year
Lawns need feeding in spring to kick growth off after winter, and again in early autumn to help them recover from a summer of use and toughen up before the cold months. A summer feed can help too if things are looking tired, but don’t do it during a heatwave, it tends to scorch rather than help. Autumn feed should be lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium, that builds root strength rather than pushing leaf growth that’ll just die back over winter anyway.
Moss, thatch and compacted soil
Moss usually points to poor drainage, too much shade, or grass cut too short. Scarifying in spring or autumn clears out moss and built up thatch so air, water and nutrients can actually reach the roots. If the lawn floods after rain or feels spongy underfoot, compacted soil’s often the cause, and aerating with a fork or a hollow tine aerator makes a genuine difference. For lawns with a persistent waterlogging problem though, the issue tends to sit below the surface rather than being something scarifying alone will fix. That’s where proper drainage work comes in, and it’s something our turfing and drainage team deal with a fair amount across Stockport and the surrounding areas.
When maintenance alone won’t cut it
Sometimes a lawn’s thinned out, gone patchy, or been wrecked by building work to the point where ongoing care isn’t going to bring it back properly. In that situation, re turfing gives you a proper reset instead of patching over the same problem year after year. It’s quicker than seeding too, you get a usable lawn within a few weeks rather than months. If that sounds like your garden, it’s worth getting it looked at rather than carrying on fighting a losing battle with feed and scarifying.
Don’t forget the edges
A lawn with sharp, defined edges looks considerably tidier than one without, even when the grass itself isn’t perfect. Re cutting edges with a half moon edger once or twice a season keeps borders sharp and stops grass creeping into the beds. It’s a small job that makes a bigger difference than most people expect.
If you’d rather just hand it over
Not everyone’s got the time or the inclination to stay on top of all this, and that’s exactly what our garden maintenance service is for. Regular mowing, feeding, weeding and general upkeep, without you having to think about the calendar. It works well alongside our wider landscaping work too, so if your lawn sits next to fencing or a patio that also needs sorting, we can look at the whole garden rather than just one bit of it.
Getting started
Whether you’re after advice, a one off tidy up, or a full re turf, the best first step is a proper look at the garden itself. Every job starts with a free site survey and a no obligation quote, so you know exactly what’s involved before you commit to anything.
